If you’re anything like me, you love to start your day with the breakfast of champions – No, I’m not talking about “Wheaties.” Your first meal of the day is the most important so why not fuel your body with superior nutrition?
A bowl of instant oatmeal, a bagel with cream cheese or cold cereal with milk isn’t going to give you the sustained high energy your body and mind need to make it through until your next meal. So, what would a breakfast of champions really look like? It would consist of leafy greens, more veggies, protein and superfoods.
My favorite way to indulge in this lovely act of nourishing my body and mind is by blending up a green smoothie. The great thing about green smoothies is that there are an infinite number of ways to make them and they taste amazing (when done right.)
Some of the benefits of consuming green smoothies:
- Eating raw in itself is a huge benefit as you get all the nutrients without the breakdown of enzymes and vitamins that comes from heating food over 118 degrees.
- Leafy greens are jam-packed full of vitamins, minerals, fiber, chlorophyll and more – providing you with amazing energy and healing benefits.
- Smoothies are quick and easy to prepare.
- Blending your greens makes them super simple to digest, giving your body an easy opportunity to quickly assimilate and absorb all the powerful nutrition.
The only problem I encounter with green smoothies is that they make me cold, which is fine in the warmer seasons and not so great during the cooler seasons. BUT I’ve discovered a way to change that. There are two things I began doing that allows me to enjoy my green smoothies all the way through the colder months.
1. Add warming spices like cinnamon, Cayenne pepper and ground nutmeg. Not only do they “spice” up the taste of the smoothie, they warm you up from the inside out.
2. Blend the smoothie for a longer period of time and it takes the chill off completely. Now I don’t recommend drinking a warm or hot smoothie for a couple of reasons – 1) If you heat it above 118 degrees the benefits of eating raw are no longer valid, 2) it tastes weird.
If you have a Vitamix blender like I do, you’ll find that if you blend the smoothie for longer than it actually needs, the smoothie “chills out”, leaving you with a room temp smoothie that goes down with ease and doesn’t leave you shivering.
If you don’t have a Vitamix you can check them out here. AND, if you order one be sure to use my special ID to receive FREE shipping and handling. The code is: 06-006662
